Year 5

Welcome to Year Five!

Class Teacher: Mr Severin

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Eldon

First Half Term Overview

Theme: Raid, Invade, Stayed!

We will start the year learning about the invasion, arrival and settlement of the British Isles, by the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. We will also be looking at how the local area has developed as a result. We will enjoy a special Anglo-Saxon/ Viking day to enhance and consolidate our learning where will have the chance to dress up in appropriate period clothing.

Our two main texts this term is ‘Beowulf’ by Michael Morpurgo and ‘How to Train Your Dragon' by Cressida Cowell. Both texts will link with our topic work and will allow us to explore different texts related to the period of study in our topic. Video representations of the stories will also be used.

We will building on the English skills and understandings we have developed in Lower Key Stage 2. We will be focussing on developing our ability to use sentences and understand their structure by using different genres of writing across all areas of the curriculum.  Grammar, punctuation and spelling skills will all be taught through our English course.

In reading, we will continue to develop our comprehension skills using different text types and activities with the aim of improving our prediction, inference and general reading skills.

The children will continue to learn their spellings list on a weekly basis.
