Welcome to Autumn Term 2018 - Our topic this term is;

'Eureka'

To begin this topic, we are looking, hearing, talking, reading and making all things ancient Greek! We will also consider the impact ancient Greece has had on our society; from our alphabet to our architecture.

English: Our class book is called 'Who Let the Gods Out' by Maz Evens and comes highly recommended by other ks2 teachers. So far the Children seem to really enjoy our class reading sessions.
Our current focus in English is myths, especially Greek ones. We are going to learn how to describe characters and action as well as how to include speech to ensure our Greek myths are just as compelling as the ones we have been reading together.
BBC school radio has some wonderfully voiced Greek myths:

Mathematics: In Mathematics this term, we will be exploring number and algebra. We are going to learn how to investigate numbers, spot patterns and solve problems.

We will regularly revisit the four mathematical operations and continue to use these within our Big Maths sessions.

As always, please continue to encourage the children to practise their tables especially in the context of real life example, for example when shopping.

Spelling: over the year we will learn the Statutory Word lists for years three and four, as well as the spelling rules linked with the Assertive Mentoring programme. Each of these will be taught and regularly practised within the classroom, as well as being sent home on a weekly basis for additional independent practise. This will be assessed on an ongoing basis throughout the summer term.

R.E: Within R.E., we will have a focus on the creation story. We will look at the implications of the story and the impact it has on different groups of people.

Science: Our Science focus for this half term will be sound. We are going to be scientists and investigate how it works by experimenting with the different variables. We will find the variables that change the different features of sound, such as volume and pitch.

Art and Design: We will be following the design process to create our own architectural models. This half term our aim to to create a class model of a Greek revival style building and next half term we will contrast that by creating our own brutalist structure in the style of Denys Lasdun.

Music: We will be using Charanga to develop our listening and appraisal skills.

P.E:  We are going to start our P.E Topic with some games. We will develop our use of strategy to help us be more successful when attacking and defending. In our class we will also be participating in the daily mile club and track our improvements over the year.

We look forward to working with your amazing children throughout this term and this year.

Kind regards,

Miss Oldale, Miss Hartley and Mrs. Eldon
